Music to Celebrate the Life of
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother
The Royal Collection
Born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon on the 4th August 1900. Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was the wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. She was also Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband’s accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was the last Empress of India.
The concert to celebrate the life of The Queen Mother was held at the Royal Albert Hall on the 15th May 2003 following her sad death in 2002. There was standing room only for this special evening which was produced and directed by Christopher Palmer-Jeffery and featured charities including UK Youth, and Mencap.
Her Majesty the Queen’s personal piper, Jim Motherwell, played a moving tribute to the late Queen Mother, and a world premier was written in her honour by Cathcart Young Composer of the Year, simply named ‘Elizabeth’. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed to favourites by renowned composers Handel, Walton, Jacob, Elgar and Verdi. There was also a tribute from one of Her Majesty’s favourite Calvary regiments, The Scotts Guards with pipes and drums, who played a medley of compositions they named ‘Balmoral Favourites’.
